  • Bottom crust for a 9 or 10-inch pie
  • 3– 4 cups peeled apple slices about 6 – 8 apples
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup cane sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter cold, cut into pieces
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon grated nutmeg

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Butter a 9 or 10 inch pie plate and line it with a pastry shell.
  2. Peel the apples and slice them into a bowl. Add ½ cup cane sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon and toss to coat well.
  3. To prepare the topping: in a mixing bowl or the bowl of your food processor, mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon and ground nutmeg. Cut or pulse in the butter.
  4. Pour the apples into the prepared pie shell. Spread the crumb topping over the apples.
  5. Bake the pie on a sheet pan in the oven until the apples are cooked and the juice turns clear, about 40 – 45 minutes. Let cool and cut into slices.
